The SWLLN held an Interactive event for employers, education officers and staff in libraries, museums, archives, galleries and heritage sites in the South West at the Fleet Air Arm Museum on 17 July.

This event focused on the educational development work of the SWLLN in the South West. With a focus on learning in the workplace, new Foundation Degrees are under development which will transform the career development opportunities for staff in the cultural services sector.

The day aimed to get people inspired about the educational function of their organisations, in a climate of continued challenges, not least from budgetary constraints - the day provided an opportunity to take a step back and think about the wider picture and enjoy networking with colleagues from across the region.

The event gave the opportunity to:
  • Influence the development of Foundation Degrees for cultural services in the South West
  •  Tour the Fleet Air Arm Museum Reserve Collection, much of which is never open to the public
  • Enjoy topical speakers and workshops and time for networking

Speakers:

The keynote speaker was Michael Leece OBE, who is an inspiring speaker and who was Chief Executive of the National Marine Aquarium from 1997 to 2007. In that time he oversaw expansion and development of the Aquarium into an internationally recognised leader in the public engagement of science. He was awarded the OBE in November 2003 for services to tourism. He now runs his own consultancy business and is Chair of Plymouth Chamber of Commerce.

Alasdair MacNaughtan, Plymouth City Librarian spoke about skills for librarians in the 21st Century and Jennie Godsalve from Creative and Cultural Skills outlined the support that they provide for the sector.
Information from the Foundation Degree Workshop and presentations from the day can be downloaded on the right-hand side of this page under related documents.
