Public Services (5b)
Aim: To identify or develop units and/or materials to support potential learners in the public services resulting in spanning level 2 to postgraduate with up to three providers from 1st year employer and provider engagement: sustainability, partnership working, civil contingency/emergency response.
Emergency Response and Management
The SWLLN is currently funding the development of new Higher Education modules and supporting materials at City College Plymouth and at three sites within Cornwall College in this crucial area of public and voluntary sector service. Employer engagement is again central to the developments and Peter Pierpoint, a SWLLN Progression Strand worker, has overseen the work that entails liaison with the Police, Ambulance, and Emergency Rescue services. Of especial interest is the notion of letting employers choose groups of three modules from a range so that part-time and CPD activity can be supported and funded whilst attracting certification from the University of Plymouth; this is a key feature of the programmes being created by Ben Spurway from Cornwall College’s Lusty Glaze site.
Children’s Services
The SWLLN is playing a small part in the workforce development project taking place at Plymouth City Council. The University College of St Mark and St John and the Open University, again in tandem with the HLSP, are combining their skills to research and meet the needs of the Children’s Services team in Plymouth. This project is of especial interest since it is anticipated that members of the service team will be offered an opportunity to assess their possible claims for the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) using tools being worked up by another SWLLN project.
