Hugh Lloyd-Jones
Hugh is the SWLLN's APEL Development Co-ordinator based at the University of Exeter.
Hugh graduated from the University of Kent at Canterbury in 1973 with a BA Hons in Sociology. He then worked in rural economic and social development in Mid Wales from 1974 to 1980.
In 1980 Hugh was appointed County Co-ordinator for Special Programmes for Powys County Council setting up training and work experience programmes for unemployed adults and young people.
In 1983 he joined Somerset County Council Local Education Authority to set up the Somerset and Dorset Accredited Centre, a staff development unit for those working in government funded work-based learning.
While at SADAC, Hugh worked with both the City and Guilds and the RSA Exam Boards developing and piloting a range of teacher and trainer awards in areas such as counselling skills, open learning delivery and assessor qualifications.
In 1986 Hugh was asked to sit on a DfES committee looking at the development needs of staff working with learners with special needs in post 16 education and training, which produced a set of recommendations in ‘A Special Professionalism’.
In addition he was a member of the RSA’s Teacher Education and Training Committee and the National Institute for Careers Education and Counselling (NICE) Advisory Board.
Since leaving SADAC Hugh has had an extensive freelance career working with a wide variety of industry training bodies, government departments, training providers and FE and HE institutions on areas such as disaffected young people, learning accounts, qualifications, employer engagement and quality development and assurance.
Hugh also acts as Editor for T magazine, a monthly publication, which focuses on the Further Education Sector and the work of the Learning and Skills Council and associated bodies.
He has a continuing interest in the government’s attempts to implement the Leitch Report proposals.
