Nick studied Economics at Leeds University (before decimalisation!) as an undergraduate and stayed on to read for an MPhil in Economic Statistics looking into the economics of professional football. He took up a lecturing post in 1972 at Hull University where he taught Economic Principles and Mathematics for Economists. In 1979 he joined the then Plymouth Polytechnic and progressed through the position of director of undergraduate programmes to the role of Head of Department in the Plymouth Business School before “retiring” in 2003. Since then he has developed his interest in quality assurance and enhancement that started with QAA Subject Reviews in Economics at six UK universities, continued with the Institutional Audit of London Metropolitan University and continues today with a role in the IQER pilots. He has also applied the QAA methods overseas working in Jordan, Egypt and Algeria reviewing the quality of provision in business and management departments. Around these “on ground” activities he is an online instructor for Liverpool University’s MBA and manages to get group work going over several time zones! Another facet of his post-retirement activity has been centred on the development of Higher Education in Further Education and has worked in two of the three colleges in Cornwall. On 12 March 2007 he commenced his new post with the SWLLN being appointed Strand Leader for the CVPDU strand which covers the disciplines underpinning provision in Heritage, Tourism and the Public Services with the clear intent to develop a complete ladder of Higher Education opportunities for those currently working in those vocational areas and holding either certificated qualifications or appropriate experiential learning.
